Dear Folks:
Jan Martin just left so I will write a few lines to you. Jan brought her two boys over for a while so we could get a little acquainted before she leaves. They certainly seemed to like it here with the electric train and all the stuff around. They are awfully nice boys and Elmer and I are so anxious to be real nice to them after hearing from Jan how Warnie treats them. She said they never can be downstairs when he is home and he doesn't talk to them at all. I gave the kids milk and cake and Jan said they never got a snack before going to bed because Warnie just didn't want to see them around at all. Anyway I asked Jan if she thought the boys would like to go to the Christian Science Sunday School with Jimmy and Mary and Jan thought that was just wonderful. The boys have been brought up in Science as both the father and Jan were and the boys have been in a Christian Science boarding school most of the time since Jan has been separated from the father. Jan said she has been wanting to start them in Sunday School but Warnie is just terribly against the religion. She said she certainly didn't know what Warnie was really like when she married him. Warnie isn't even speaking to Jan now because she is leaving the boys with us. He says we are his friends and he thinks it is just terrible she is asking such a favor of us, but Jan didn't ask me to do it even, I just offered. Elmer has always been able to talk sense into Warnie though so we will have Warnie over while Jan is gone and he can talk to him. I hope he will notice too what a good time the boys will be having.
Last night I went to the bridge club. Jan belongs to that too. Anyway, I won two prizes. We have a traveling prize. Whoever takes a trick with the deuce of trump gets it and they have it until someone else takes a trick with the deuce and the prize travels around from one to another all evening and when the game breaks up the one who has it gets to keep it and I had it. It was a very nice box of writing paper. I'll be writing to you on it. Then I won first prize which was just a lovely pink hostess tea apron very, very frilly. I had wonderful cards and was able to bid slams and make them.
I found out that that experience Charity went through was a hurricane. Ruth Recroft's home town was several miles from there but debris was blown all the way to her town. The town where the storm was was completely flattened out.
I am making Mary a spring coat. I have it all cut out and baisted so tomorrow I am going over to Mabel's and sew it and she is going to help me with the collar and I also have to line it but she will give me all the help I need. I also am making slacks out of the same material. It is a blue wool and I surely hope I can do a good job on it.
I think I have gone out every day this week, except today and I cleaned the house pretty good today so can leave the first thing in the morning for Mabel's. Yesterday we had the baby shower over at Doris's. It was fun. Mabel was at the shower too. I was to bake a cake so the night before I baked it but it was a failure and fell all apart when I tried to get it out of the pan. It tasted all right, though, so we are getting rid of it o.k. Anyway, the next morning of the shower I just hated to hurry and bake another one so after talking to Mabel she suggested I buy an Angel Food cake and come over to her house early and frost it over there so that is what I did.
This Charlotte Murphy who lives down a few houses from me is in the bridge club too. We both have a boy and a girl the same ages and Charlotte and I are the same age and our husbands are the same age. Isn't that funny. I like her very much. Her little girl and Jimmy are in the same class and her boy and Mary are the same age too, only a week apart.
Well Folks the main thing I wanted to tell you was about Jan's boys and it is getting late and I really should pin my hair up so I had better stop for this time. I hope Gladys is fine and I'm looking for a telephoned wire any day.
Love, Helen
