My dear Helen, I wonder where you are now. Thought about you a lot yesterday. Hardly thought you had time to make Baltimore, and also wondered if you intended stopping in to see the Dews. Your letter came Saturday telling me you and Elmer were leaving for Boston the next day. The lost is found. This morning I cleaned off the card table and found your card between two magazines. Felt sure it would come to light sometime, but didn’t know when. Yesterday afternoon Papa and I went up to the cabin. This is the first time we have been up since Dec. 7th. There was snow on the ground after leaving Twin Creeks. The road was very icy so we drove slowly. At Greenwater there was about 6 inches of snow. It took about an hour to warm the cabin so we felt like taking off our coats. We had a lovely fire in the fireplace and enjoyed it all very much. I got supper ready about 6 P.M. Washed the dishes and packed the leftovers, then played Papa two games of pinochle. We each won a game. We came home about 9. The night was lovely. Clear as could be and the sky just full of stars. Today it is above 50° out and sunny. Saturday night after closing time Cliff told all the clerks that they would have to start taking their vacations now or someone would be layed off. Today Papa told him he would take his next week. We were sorry to hear Elmer had been sick. Too bad he had to lose some of those pounds he had gained. Let’s hope when he gets up north to where he is going, the food and climate will help him to feel better. The mailman just came. Brought me two letters from you. Will read them now. Have read them. Am glad I can send this to Boston, which will save some time in reaching you. If Bob was in New York when Florence wrote it is likely his company is being sent some where out of the country. We can help him by knowing he is safe wherever he is. This whole war is a terrible thing. So hope it can end quickly. Phoebe Wilde came down to see me this afternoon. I did not get to write to Gladys or Jimmie yesterday so want to write a few lines this afternoon. Will write more to you tonight. When you get settled will send you another smock or two I have fixed of Stella’s. Hope this reaches you before the last of the week. Saturday is your birthday. Wish you many happy returns of the day. Much love to you both, Mother. |
